BergenDanceMakers perform "Off the Wall" at Proximity opening reception
This January's exhibition in the Mikhail Zakin Gallery featured works by local artists. At the opening reception on January 27, BergenDanceMakers delivered an "Off the Wall" performance, responding to the works on view in a variety of five minute, movement-based interpretations. The group is organized by Clare Porter, whose leadership in the improvisational dance group is informed by her extensive biography of teaching and professional accolades. Dana Crow provided a soundtrack with his skillful, improvised guitar riffs. All together, the event was a fortuitous mix of visual, musical, and movement-based talent. Here is a selection of photos of artful moments during the event:

Proximity: Local Art on View at Mikhail Zakin Gallery
The Art School at Old Church is presenting Proximity: Local Art on View, an exhibition of works by nine exceptional artists living locally. The show is on view through February 5 in the school's Mikhail Zakin and Café galleries.
The Art School has long held a reputation as a hub for artistically inclined members of the local community. While the Art School is known for studio art instruction, gifted artists also make art in their own studios, perfecting their skills and exhibiting work while adding to the richness of local art. Proximity: Local Art on View brings those artists together, revealing to art fans the immense skill of their neighbors.
Floral
paintings by Jean Marie Bucich of River Vale, NJ and metal cityscape sculptures
by Janet Indick of Teaneck, NJ add a bright intensity to the show. Exquisite botanical
watercolors by Marguerite Botto and pencil drawings by Richard Botto, husband
and wife living in Ridgefield Park, NJ contribute an awe-inspiring precision.
Watercolors by Brian Degnon of Bergenfield, NJ and black and white photography
by John Rizzuto of South River, NJ add artistic technique combined with local
subjects in a celebration of New Jersey.
Elaine
Lorenz of Hawthorne, NJ exhibits wall sculptures in ceramic and natural
materials that are meditations on form and flow. Keith Fernandez of North
Bergen, NJ contributes oil paintings on sea shells, the precious scale and
natural substrate offering small scenes of his native country, Venezuela. Paintings
by Lynne Furst Kalish of West Nyack, NY bring exuberance to the gallery with colorful
abstractions of familiar scenes in art history such as carnivals and the artist’s
studio chair.
